After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and just are his judgments.” — Revelation 19:1-2
George Müller, known for his robust life in God that was filled with amazing stories of God’s faithfulness, was always asked about his secret. This is typical for those who have ascended to the heights, people think, “there must be a secret!” Here is how Müller began to respond:
“According to my judgement the most important point to be attended to is this: above all things see to it that your souls are happy in the Lord. Other things may press upon you, the Lord's work may even have urgent claims upon your attention, but I deliberately repeat, it is of supreme and paramount importance that you should seek above all things to have your souls truly happy in God Himself! Day by day seek to make this the most important business of your life. This has been my firm and settled condition for the last five and thirty years. For the first four years after my conversion I knew not its vast importance, but now after much experience I specially commend this point to the notice of my younger brethren and sisters in Christ: the secret of all true effectual service is joy in God, having experimental acquaintance and fellowship with God Himself.”
This is not a secret if viewed from a heavenly perspective, where raucous praise is eternally laid upon God. Not because they have to, but because they see God as he is, and this vision causes them to delight and rejoice in him willingly.
We do not have to wait until we get there to share in their delight. We can make time to become happy in God this moment. The problems that we face pale in comparison to him; indeed, in the light of his presence they disappear altogether. Make it your chiefest duty to make yourself happy in God! Begin this moment!
Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and Earth. You are worthy of all glory, honor and praise. You have made all things, and they are very good. You have given us life from your very Spirit, and we are thankful. Teach us, Holy One, to delight in you more than we sulk or complain, or even do work for you. Teach us to delight, that our lives might reflect your eternal and pervasive joy. In Jesus name. Amen.
