And Now… 5 Thoughts From the Week
1. Sigh… I agree with Coach Jim Harbaugh
Last Saturday, Michigan beat Ohio State in THE GAME 😢. Afterwards, Coach Harbaugh, who wasn’t allowed on the sidelines due to a suspension… because of cheating!, remarked on the hype that leads up to the game every year. He said,
It's not healthy. It's not healthy for the student-athletes on either side when you're trying to put that much [pressure]. That somebody's practically thinking it's life or death... I would say it's not healthy for the young people.
100% agree. Observing the heightened levels of anxiety, joy, disappointment, vitriol, etc, all because of… a game. The Game, yes, but still, a game.
We already have a mental health crisis, do we need to add more pressure to the results of something that is meant to be entertainment?
2. Road Trip Advice
If you want to stay awake on a road trip, choose the karaoke option over an audio book. Last week I sang my way to Atlanta without even 1 yawn! Of course, my family suffered, but…
3. The Uselessness of Black Friday
We had to replace our water heater last week, right when all the Black Friday deals were out. There were deals on a bunch of useless stuff that everyone probably already has; there were no deals on water heaters. 🫠
4. Proper Listening is a Game Changer!
This quote by Miguel de Unamuno got to me this week:
“We need to pay less attention to what people are trying to tell us, and more to what they tell us without trying.”
5. Good King Wenceslas
Since Advent is here, I’m devoting my weekday podcasts to Advent/Christmas reflections. The first one was on my man, Good King Wenceslas. Listen, here.
