Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara
Learn to Rediscover the Nobility of Service
I’m writing this review in January, and I think I’ve already found my book of the year!
Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara* calls each one of us to rediscover the nobility of service and hospitality. By sharing stories of how the combination of excellent dining and magnanimous hospitality propelled Eleven Madison Park to become the #1 restaurant in the world.
You will be inspired and equipped to transform your life and business, whether you work in the restaurant industry or not.
3 Big Takeaways
There is nobility in service.
Be curious enough to find ways to make peoples experiences “legendary.”
“Luxury means giving more, hospitality means being more thoughtful.”
Who Should Read It?
Everyone. It will teach you how to honor people, and make them feel special.
Most Impressive Idea in the Book (No Spoilers)
Dreamweaver. A role/job at Eleven Madison Park responsible for making normal experiences enchanting.
All in all, I find this book refreshing because business has taken a dehumanizing turn. Everything is a transaction, there is little honor, peoples words matter very little. In reading this book you get the sense of what is possible if every person, and every business, sought to bring honor to every encounter.
It reminds me of the words of the most unreasonably hospitable person that ever lived, “If you want to be great in God’s Kingdom, learn to be a servant of all.” We always viewed those words as, “learn to be less.” Turns out, being a servant is learning to be truly human, and such servanthood brings out the humanity in others.
